Delco-Remy Electrical Components for the Reo and Federal Truck, 20-Ton, 6x4

This page added 11-18-2020.

Ordnance Supply Catalogs were used by the U.S. Army in World War Two to order and stock repair parts for all of the equipment it used.  The Catalogs had a complete listing of not only the original components that went into the construction of the units, but sub-components and repair kits as well.  This is shown below where not only are the sixteen Delco-Remy OEM electrical components listed, but dozens of spare part and spare parts kits are also listed.

Each and every piece of equipment used by the military, whether it was for the U.S. Army or the U.S. Navy, had a similar document.  During World War Two, the U.S. military  emphasized standardization of equipment in order to keep the number of spare parts to a minimum and also assure equipment in repair had the necessary spare parts.  The supply and logistics issues of keeping the American Army and Navy in spare parts all over the world during World War Two is mind-boggling.

This page shows that every major part of the vehicle is included.  Once Delco-Remy or other companies were awarded contracts to supply components for this vehicle, they would then need to supply a list of spare parts and repair kits to the Army Service Forces to assemble into this book.

The Truck, 20-Ton, 6x4, Diesel was a Federal Truck Company of Detroit, MI design, which was also built by The Reo Motor Car Company in nearby Lansing, MI.  The trucks were designed and built to pull semi-trailers with heavy loads, including tanks.  The one shown above is a Federal-built unit because it has a winch.  Reo only built the non-winch version.  Both types were powered by a Cummins HB600 engine.  Delco-Remy shipped the cranking motors and DC generators to Cummins Engine Company in Columbus, IN.  D-R also shipped switches to Federal Truck in Detroit and the Reo Motor Car Company in Lansing, MI.

This is the Reo XS-28 20-ton, 6x4 diesel trailer truck.

The information in a U.S. Army Ordnance Supply Catalog provided a list of spare parts to repair and keep the vehicles running.  Column 5 gives the part description and the supplier's part number for each component.  For Delco-Remy, these are the DR part numbers.  Columns 6, 7, and 8 provided the number of spare parts needed over a year's period for 100 vehicles.  Delco-Remy and other suppliers would provide these numbers for their respective products.

The DC generator and its spare parts and spare parts kits are listed starting on this page.  The spare parts kits also have listed each part that is in them.

Regulators and spare parts start on this page.

Cranking motors and spare parts begin on this page.

Delco-Remy has one relay listed under the category of Instrument Wiring.

Switches and spare parts are listed on this page.

The Guide Lamp Division of General Motors was also a supplier for this vehicle.

The horn button is on this page.  There appears to be an error in the repair kit for it.  RG is the designation for Ross Gear and Tool of Lafayette, IN which made steering gears for this vehicle.
